Some people confuse Adventists for Jehovah’s Witnesses, but we do not believe the same things. A few similarities in the way both came into existence from sectarian movements developing around 1840s have led to this confusion.
Some major differences between what Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses believe are listed below. This list is not exhaustive.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe |
Seventh-day Adventists believe |
|
Christ is God's Son and is inferior to Him |
There is only one God, made up of three eternal Persons who coexist in unity. God the Eternal Son is equal to the Father. |
|
Christ was first of God's creations |
God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity accomplished, and the world is judged. |
|
Earth will never be destroyed or depopulated |
The earth will be depopulated and desolate during the period of one thousand years when when Christ will reign with his people in heaven. This one thousand year period will mark the time between the first and second resurrections. (Read about the one thousand year period.) |
|
Only a little flock of 144,000 go to heaven and rule with Christ |
Adventist scholars believe that this number is most likely symbolic and represents the people of God. We also believe that faithful people from all ages, not just Adventists, are the people of God. |
|
A Christian should keep separate from world |
The Bible says Christians should be the “salt” of the world. “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." (Matthew 5:13, NKJV). Jesus is saying Christians should make a difference in the world. That’s why Adventists are involved in religious liberty and human rights issues, humanitarian aid and development, health and wholeness, education and personal growth and social and community issues. They obey civil authorities and contribute to society in other ways. |
|
Taking blood into body through mouth or veins violates God's laws |
Adventists see no Biblical evidence to discourage the use of blood and blood products in medical treatment. Most Adventists will also donate blood for others. For more than 100 years, Adventist hospitals worldwide have used blood transfusions, with several major Adventist hospitals also performing organ transplantations. |
|
Sabbath observance was given only to Israel and ended with Mosaic Law |
The fourth commandment of God’s unchangeable law continues to require the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath. |
