Attack in Solomons Church Compound
The Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Solomon Islands region provided moral support for the couple attacked on its Honiara compound last weekend before they were moved by the Australian embassy to the country’s control residential area. Prayers for the couple are also continuing.“This is a terrible incident,” says Pastor Lawrence Tanabose, president of the Adventist Church for the Trans-Pacific region. “We will do all we can to provide assistance to the couple during this traumatic period.”
Six men from a nearby squatter settlement were arrested on Monday and face trial for the raid on the couple’s rented house on the church’s compound in which three of them gang raped a woman. The couple, who are not members of the Adventist Church, had leased the house on a short term basis a few weeks ago.
Another house was broken into during the attack with minimal damages to property. A storm that evening had allowed the attackers to cut through a fence surrounding the church’s compound undetected.
Security in the area has been tightened since the attack.
“The church is cooperating fully with the Australian embassy and the police during the investigation,” says Pastor Tanabose. “We are all praying for the increasing unrest and violence in the country to end soon.”
