Adventists Reaffirm Biblical Creation
Melody Tan, Adventist News Network
Seventh-day Adventists believe God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The reaffirmation of the Biblical account of creation comes in response to recent reports in newspapers stating the first 11 chapters of Genesis are not historical.
“Adventists believe in a literal, recent, six-day creation as told in Genesis.” says Dr Paul Petersen, an Old Testament scholar and Director of Biblical Research for the Adventist Church in the South Pacific. “Though the biblical account is not a scientific description in any modern sense, it is reliable and trustworthy as a revelation from God.”
Dr Petersen says that creation is important to all Christians, including Seventh-day Adventists. “Creation is a foundational pillar in the belief system of the church,” he says. “To insist it is not historical would question the authenticity of God’s salvation plan.”
Adventists are aware of the challenges science presents to faith and religion. Adventist scientists research and regularly publish in the ongoing debate between evolution and creation.
However, Adventist leaders around the world are also called to seek ways to educate people in the issues involved in the doctrine of creation, such as the responsibility to care for the environment and to respect all people.
