Church members asked to help with Christchurch’s major evangelistic series
Christchurch, New Zealand

Seventh-day Adventists church members throughout the South Pacific, and around the world, are being asked to start making plans to help with a major evangelistic series in Christchurch at the start of next year.

“This is going to be the most significant program South New Zealand (SNZ) has seen in a long time,” says Pastor Craig Gillis, president of the Adventist Church in SNZ. “Church members should come along not only to help, but to listen to one of the most profound and successful speakers of the church.”

John CarterJohn Carter, who was the main speaker at the recent SNZ Adventist camp meeting, will be presenting the Carter Report in Christchurch from 31 January to 28 February in 2009.

A series of programs and seminars will also be developed throughout this year to help equip and ready church members in SNZ for the Carter Report.

A leadership summit has been scheduled for February where leaders from every church in SNZ will learn about the effectiveness of small groups and how to run them. Some 60 small groups are expected to spring up throughout SNZ as a result.

A new show, the 9am Sunday Breakfast Show hosted by Pastor James Toogood, will start airing on Canterbury’s free-to-air TV in May. The show is expected not only to introduce Jesus Christ to the public, but also serve as a resource to small group leaders.

“Planning for the Carter Report has been really exciting. We have raised well over three quarters of the money needed with the help of donations and pledges from church members.” says Pastor Gillis. “Our mission is to proclaim the everlasting Gospel and we will do that, and do it with enthusiasm.”

Pastor Gillis believes SNZ is one of the biggest mission fields for the Adventist Church because of the large Adventist and non-Adventist ratio. “Only one in every 530 people here are Adventists, and SNZ has a population of more than a million.”

Volunteers are needed to ensure the program runs smoothly and to meet and greet guests. Organisers hope that 2000 people will attend the program every night, more than the 1700 SNZ church members can support.

“Prayer is also very important here,” says Pastor Gillis. “Mighty things will be achieved through prayer.”
